Sexual and reproductive rights in Europe have over the past few years been strategically eroded. A clear picture is emerging of the rise and power of the anti-gender movement in a European context – the questions then become: who are the actors, how have they gained ground, and what is needed to preserve and promote sexual and reproductive rights?
Come and hear Neil Datta tackle these questions when he talks about how anti-rights and religious extremist actors have increasingly gained access to political power, developed their international networks, and what new strategies they have employed to take over political parties, institutions, and states.
Neil Datta is the director of the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual & Reproductive Rights (EPF) and this year he published the report The Next Wave: How Religious Extremism Is Regaining Power (2025), which maps the accelerating economic expansion of movements working to abolish decades of hard-won sexual and reproductive rights across Europe. The report builds on previous analyses of the anti-gender movement in the Tip of the Iceberg (2021) and Restoring the Natural Order (2018).
