Gender Lunch at SAMF
For our next gender lunch, hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences, we invite you to a structured discussion on Teaching gender and sexuality in contested times
No matter the discipline, teaching gender and sexuality can raise challenging questions about how we approach contested concepts and communicate scientific complexity, but also how we create spaces that are safe yet support critical discussion. Drawing on reflections from teaching gender and public policy, alongside experiences of teaching biological sex in psychology, we will then open up a conversation about the challenges and possibilities of teaching these topics today.
Over lunch, we might explore questions such as:
- How do we teach complex and contested concepts without oversimplifying them?
- How can we make room for disagreement while maintaining a respectful and intellectually rigorous learning environment?
- What happens when scientific and socio-political understandings of gender and sex come into tension?
- How do we respond to students who approach these topics from different perspectives?
- What can we learn from each other’s teaching practices across disciplines?
The aim is to exchange experiences and learn from one another across disciplinary boundaries. We will go where the discussion takes us and warmly welcome you to bring their own questions and reflections to the discussion.

About the Gender Lunch series
Gender Lunch is a recurring event that brings together researchers from across the University of Copenhagen for an informal lunch with an academic twist. Every month, a different faculty acts as host, creating a rotating setting where diverse academic traditions and perspectives on gender can meet.
The aim of Gender Lunch is to provide space for interdisciplinary conversations about gender and diversity – both as research fields and as lived experiences in academia. Over a shared meal, one or more researchers introduce a current theme, ongoing research, an article, a project, or teaching practice in the field. This serves as a starting point for discussion and exchange of perspectives.
